Your Department of Education loan has recently been transferred to MOHELA for servicing. We have answers to what are some important questions you likely have.

FAQs

  • Who is MOHELA?

MOHELA is a contracted servicer for the Department of Education. We are on the approved list of servicers on the Federal Student Aid website. We have been servicing student loans and working with students and families for more than 30 years.

  • How do I know if my Department of Education loan has been transferred to MOHELA?

The Department of Education may assign your federally-owned student loan to MOHELA for servicing. When that happens, we will contact you once our system receives the transferred loan. We will let you know that your loan has been transferred to MOHELA and will include our contact information. Once our system receives all of the data about your account, MOHELA will be listed in the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) as your loan servicer.

  • Why is my loan servicing being transferred?

Aspire Resources Inc., the servicer to which your loan was assigned, has decided to end its contract as a Direct Loan (federal) servicer later this year. As a result, accounts previously assigned to Aspire will be transferred to MOHELA, another member of the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) federal loan servicer team. Your loans are not being sold. ED will continue to own your loans; however MOHELA will manage your loans and assist you on ED’s behalf.

  • Will my school know which company is servicing my Department of Education loans?

When your Department of Education loan transfers to MOHELA, we will report it on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). You and the student financial aid office at your school can then view the information. Information isn’t reported on the NSLDS until the transferred loans have been fully loaded to our system, which takes approximately 14 days.

We look forward to providing you with excellent service. If you have questions about MOHELA as your new servicer, we’re here to help!
